Abstract: Activated carbon (AC), known for its large specific surface area and well-developed internal channels, is widely used in odor removal, smoke gas purification and water purification. However, its hydrophilicity can lead to rapid adsorption saturation, impeding organic adsorption and shortening its lifespan. In this study, super hydrophobic AC was prepared through surface roughening pre-treatment and propyl trimethoxysilane grafting, and applied in the M-003 adsorption tank of Yangzi Petrochemical Olefin Plant. The results showed that the super hydrophobic AC significantly outperformed the original AC in adsorbing VOCS from the plant's wastewater and exhaust gases. Additionally, the use of super hydrophobic adsorbents can reduce operational costs, meet environmental emission standards, enhance the company's environmental image and save environmental investment costs with an operational cost savings rate exceeding 32%. This demonstrates the dual economic and environmental benefits of super hydrophobic adsorbents.
