Abstract: The prevention and control of soil pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons in petroleum and petrochemical industry is one of the emphases of environmental management. Risk control or remediation of soil polluted by petroleum hydrocarbons is needed in order to reduce the environmental risks of soil pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons. This paper reviews the present status of soil pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons and environmental effects. It presents the current research progress and application of remediation technologies for soil pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons. The paper also compares the advantages and disadvantages of different remediation technologies and proposes the development direction for the remediation technologies of soil polluted by petroleum hydrocarbons.

Key words: soil pollution, petroleum hydrocarbons, environmental effects, remediation
